Every Christian should mentor (disciple) at least a few people in their world, for at least five basic reasons:

Reason #1: Jesus said so

Jesus told his followers in Matthew 28 to go and make disciples.

Reason #2: People are headed for hell

That’s a hard truth, but Jesus talked about it a lot. People in your world are going to die separated from the grace of Jesus.

Reason #3: People are failing to honor God

Mentoring isn’t just about evangelism. There are Christians right around you who fail to honor God regularly because they have no one to help them.

Reason #4: It will help you grow

You cannot grown in your faith as a follower of Jesus unless you get in the game. Don’t just be a consumer Christian. You will grow when you start mentoring someone.

Reason #5: It will help distribute the workload

There are probably a handful of people at your church who are already helping people pursue God. But they’ll get burned out if you don’t get in the game and help out.

Talk About It
  1. Watch the video together or invite someone to summarize the topic.
  2. What is your initial reaction to this video? Do you disagree with any of it? What jumped out at you?
  3. Who mentored you in the faith? How did they do it?
  4. Which of the five reasons for mentoring is most compelling to you? Are there other reasons you can think of that are not on the list?
  5. Who are the people in your church or small group that are carrying the bulk of the load for helping people pursue God? Do you think they can do it without your help? Do you think God wants them to?
  6. Make a list of people you can mentor and then make an action plan for doing it.
  7. Write a personal action step based on this conversation.
